If you tuned in to the 95th Academy Awards ceremony, you would’ve seen the long-awaited, highly desired confirmation of Brendan Fraser’s comeback; the tears of Ke Huy Quan; the long arm of Everything Everywhere All At Once scoop up historic gongs; and the appearance of Banshee’s Jenny the Donkey. There was Jimmy Kimmel, there was a lack of slaps, and, most noted by us, there was, as expected from the industry’s annual summit of the great and good, superb tailoring.
This year, we had Oscar-nom Paul Mescal in a draped white tuxedo; Michael B. Jordan donning a svelte double-breast; and Austin Butler, who swapped his Elvis capes for peak lapels. For the night’s finest ‘fits, take a look below.
Austin Butler

Following his career-booting role in Elvis, Austin Butler turned up to last night’s event as a Best Actor nominee. Though his final scenes in the film saw him weighed under prosthetics, the 31-year-old’s red-carpet look showcased his slim build in Saint Laurent, a label known for its cigarette-thin silhouettes. We particularly like his choice of a double-breasted jacket, which helps give width to the chest.
Brendan Fraser

It is said that Giorgio Armani has kitted out the most female Academy Award winners in the ceremony’s history – and, for yesterday’s event, the Italian juggernaut did a fine job for Brendan Fraser, whose tux was the hue of the deep ocean and whose tour de force lead in The Whale allowed him to scoop the blue ribbon for Best Actor.
Ke Huy Quan

A huge night for comebacks, Ke Huy Quan, once a forgotten child prodigy but now a winner of Best Supporting Actor, cut a dash in Giorgio Armani – a prosaic yet elegant ensemble, which perfectly mirrors the star’s charming, gets-the-job-done acting.
Paul Dano

Noted as an actor who takes on eccentric roles – his vow-of-silence-abiding Dwayne Hoover, in Little Miss Sunshine; The Riddler, in The Batman – Paul Dano opted for an outfit that bounced between the offbeat and the mainstream: up top was a pink shirt and matching bowtie, set underneath an embellished jacket by Dolce & Gabbana; below, to keep things from being too loud, there was a simple pair of slim black trousers.
Michael B. Jordan

We could talk for hours about the way that Michael B. Jordan’s Louis Vuitton piece snugly hugs his boxing-ring-worthy physique, or the beautiful coherence and directness of the tux’s aesthetic – but our eye is drawn to his pair of Tiffany & Co. bird brooches in diamond.
Paul Mescal

Paul Mescal is one of the most bankable actors of his generation given his successful run with Normal People, Aftersun, and his stage performance in A Streetcar Named Desire. He’s also been noted for his retro style – those shorts; his baggy 90s gear; the mullet – and his Oscars look was defined by his throwback, oversized proportions and the ivory hue of the Gucci jacket.
Idris Elba
The forever-sharp Idris Elba proved the counter to the outdated rule that says black lowers can never be paired with a blue upper; in his case, the darkness of his trousers matches that of his lapels, allowing the vibrant-blue jacket to go a notch or two brighter than is usually the case on the red carpet.

The Everything Everywhere actor gave traditional suiting a lovely touch via Adeam’s first men’s tux, which dropped the right lapel, introduced navy piping, and tied things up with a sash-style belt. “I wanted to create an evening look that expressed Harry’s multicultural background,” Adeam’s creative director, Hanako Maeda, said in an interview.
Lewis Pullman

Though Thom Browne is celebrated for his taut, shrunken proportions, Top Gun: Maverick’s Lewis Pullman asked the label for a more orthodox fit – we particularly like the sheriff-style bowtie in black grosgrain ribbon.
