Brands don’t get more British than Triumph, and the Thruxton is named after one of the most respected circuits in the country – making this a machine of true national racing pedigree.
Inspired by the Bonneville-based cafe racers of the 1960s, the Thruxton is as classically designed a bike as one could imagine. With low slung handlebars, spoked, alloy-rimmed wheels, and a single central headlamp, the bike cuts a beautifully imposing swathe – and it doesn’t hang around either.
The 865cc eight-valve engine that forms the heart of the Thruxton has been tuned for peak performance, and delivers an impressive 68 horsepower – leading to top speeds of around 115 mph.
The revised camshaft profile and high-compression pistons are in part thanks for this excess of power, and the ease with which the Thruxton handles affords even more thrill to the rider. And, with 41mm forks and chromed twin shock absorbers – adjustable to preload, the bike manages to deliver a smooth sports ride that the classic looks may belie.
But, despite this vintage image and channelling of the retro look of 1960s bikes, the Thruxton’s fully floating 320mm front disc brake and twin rear shocks make it both more comfortable and safer than the machines from which it has taken design inspiration.
It’s a design classic, solidly engineered and as powerful as you’d want a cafe racer to be. A triumph – in every sense of the word.
