If you had to choose to drive, write about, look at, dream of, spend weekends with, and speed off into the sunset with only one car, it would have to be 007’s favourite.
It’s safe to say we love Aston Martin here at Gentleman’s Journal. Which is why, when we heard that Bonhams were holding an exclusive auction at Englefield House for this celebrated Bristish marque, we had to share our bubbling excitement.
Our top picks from the sale include the ageless beauty — the DB4 Series 1 Sports Saloon designed by Tadek Marek. A car so cool it could freeze liquid nitrogen. Its majestic combination of unrestrained high performance and civilised docility make it our standout favourite.
1959 Aston Martin DB4 Series 1 Drophead Coupé — (£380,000-440,000)
If you see yourself as somewhat of a risk taker, perhaps take on-board Motor magazine’s warning about this particular DB4 when first released — alluding to a risk of ‘maximum pleasure’. If that’s one you’re willing to take (you brave, courageous soul you), then this car is for you.
But perhaps driving around in the cool DB4 hardtop isn’t your idea of fun and you feel you need a little more air in your hair, then the other three machines we’ve selected (all convertibles) are great Sunday roamers for the summer months.
Imagine blasting down the British countryside lanes with a subtle, sweet smell of petrol wafting around the cabin, and the sun glinting off the great elongated bonnet. If you can’t, you need to have words your imagination.
1958 Aston Martin DB MkIII Drophead Coupé — (£300,000-350,000)
1970 Aston Martin DB6 Mk2 Volante — (£700,000-900,000)
1965 Aston Martin DB5 4.2-Litre Convertible — (£850,000-900,000)
