Chances are that we'll be spending more time at home over the coming months, with the changing of seasons giving us ripe excuse to stay in and relax in front of a gripping film or television series. But what do you prioritise between when there is so much to choose from? Whether you have a subscription to Amazon, Netflix, or Paramount+, these are the new shows and movies available to stream this October—from workplace dramas, to action flicks, and Halloween horrors.
Fair Play (Netflix)
From Chloe Domont (the filmmaker behind Suits and Billions) comes her debut feature—a new battle of the sexes workplace drama that caused a stir at this year’s Sundance. When a coveted promotion at a cutthroat financial firm arises, supportive exchanges between the lovers begin to sour into something more sinister.
Pain Hustlers (Netflix)
Criminal conspiracies…corrupt start-ups…Chris Evans, Emily Blunt, and Andy Garcia. Pain Hustlers has a lot going for it—a quintessential 2023 drama, and a sharp, stylish look at what people can do out of desperation and greed. The film is based on a true story around America’s pharmaceutical industry, and is as thoughtful as it is thrilling.
Rotting in the Sun (MUBI)
There’s a huge stir among cinephiles for Sebastian Silva’s Rotting in the Sun; a comedy thriller starring the brilliant Jordan Firstman. The film is currently on Uber-cool independent streaming site MUBI, and unfolds as a satire on influencer culture that quickly becomes deadly. There are great performances, photography, and you’ll be able to keep up with the movie buffs when it comes into conversation.
BECKHAM (Netflix)
Superstar, fashion icon, club owner, footballer. This new documentary is a rare insight into one of the most renowned sporting names in the world, as we’ve never known him before. The series follows David Beckham’s astronomic rise and influence; with interviews and footage from his highs and lows. Great water-cooler conversation starter.
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning (Amazon Prime Video)
There’s a case to be made that Tom Cruise is the last true Hollywood movie star, and Dead Reckoning—the latest in the Mission Impossible franchise—proves he’s not slowing down. This instalment is arguably a return to form for the series, with a gripping plot and jaw-dropping stunts performed by the man himself. If you didn't catch it in cinemas, now's the perfect time.
Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn
Remember the curious case of Carlos Ghosn? The Lebanese businessman became an international fugitive after alleged financial misconduct as the head of Nissan in Japan. His colourful escape, as well as events leading up to it, are displayed in this new four-part docu-series that uses all of the evidence to ask whether he is a villain or a victim.
Pet Sematery: Bloodlines (Paramount+)
Stephen King fans are in for a treat this Halloween with Paramount+ releasing Pet Sematary: Blood Lines—a prequel to the original, gruesome story. Set in 1969, it tells the story of a young man confronting his dark family history, and an ancient evil, in small town America. Perfect for a spooky evening at home.
