When it comes to getting behind the wheel, nemo will create a bespoke itinerary for you to embark on – their recommended trip will have you start in Reykjavík, where you can take in the architectural highlights (including the soaring Hallgrímskirkja and the shimmering Harpa concert hall, by Olafur Eliasson), vibrant centre and nightlife, before going eastwards to see the Golden Circle, a 190-mile circuit that showcases a trio of Iceland’s headline destinations: Gullfoss waterfall, Thingvellir National Park, and the Geysir geothermal area, which erupts every five-to-ten minutes and can blow boiling water up to 70 metres in the air.
Heading southwards, you’ll then be encouraged to see the famed black beaches whose dark, eerie and almost supernatural appearance looks like it’s been lifted from a Tolkien novel, before concluding your trip with a soothing soak in the Blue Lagoon Spa, which is set in an 800-year-old lava field where the hot, mineral-rich geothermal waters are the perfect cocoon for the end of a hard-hitting road trip.
Regarding setting up a base from where you can go on to explore the country, nemo will organise a stay at Hotel Rangá, a luxury resort set on the south side of the country, with sweeping vistas of the rural landscape.
Blending the design ethos of both a log cabin and a hunting lodge, this bolthole makes for a homely, comforting stay, with luxe-rustic interiors; hearty Nordic fare at the in-house restaurant; and unobstructed, incomparable views of the Northern Lights from the observatory.
