When so many have been taken from us during lockdown, enjoying a bottle of good wine is one of the few great pleasures we can still delight in. But sourcing the really good stuff is proving tricker than usual at the moment. Chances are your usual wine merchant has closed temporarily and your local supermarket is sold out of anything worth drinking by the time you’ve queued to get it.
Which is where Gentleman’s Journal wine steps in. Our innovative new service allows you to mix and match your perfect six-bottle case from a choice of 12 bottles carefully selected by our experts to offer the best in red, white, rosé and sparkling wine – at price points that won’t break the bank.
Our curation will change frequently but for our first edit we’ve chosen a dozen bottles which represent some of our all time favourite wines. Read on to find out more and order your first case here.
The Reds
Whether you likes your reds robust and full-bodied or fruity and complex, we’ve got a bottle for you. To kick things off we’ve selected a Perrin Réserve Côtes du Rhône. This ruby red bottling has a nose characterised by red fruits and spice while it’s a fruity number with beautiful tannins in the mouth – and, at £13 per bottle, a real bargain. Next up is a Château Des Antonins 2016 Bordeaux Supérieur, whose deep red colour is matched by its nose of black cherry, dark chocolate and spice. Structured and balanced on the tongue, it has hints of fruit, spice and acidity perfect for pairing with classic meat dishes.
Finally, we have a Chanson Le Bourgogne Pinot Noir. Producer Chanson Père et Fils is known around the world for producing wines whose quality far outstrips their price point and this bottling is no different. A Burgundy that’s bright red in colour, with a bouquet of ripe berry fruits, liquorice and spice, it offers a complex mouthfeel with smooth tannins and a long finish.
The Whites
The changeable British weather means you’re as likely to be whipping up Richard Corrigan’s comforting fish pie as you are a light summery salad this season – but, either way, you’re going to need a great bottle of white to go with them. Our first pick, Montessora “La Giustiana” Gavi de Gavi, comes from the famed producer who has been on a meteoric rise over rate past few years. Light in colour with a rich aroma, this is a crisp wine with hints of peach, lime and almond.
Next up with opted for one of the best in a growing market of organic wines: Yalumba Organic Viognier. Thought to reduce the chance of a headache the morning after thanks to its lower sugar content, at just £10 per bottle this wine from Australia’s oldest family-owned producer is a rich, satisfying pour that you’ll turn to again and again. Finally we have a Chanson Le Bourgogne Chardonnay which hails from the prolific Côte de Beaune area of Burgundy. Opening with aromas of citrus fruits, herbs and honey, it is well structured with a lively acidity and long zesty finish.
The Rosés
Even if sipping one next to an expansive coastline isn’t likely to be an option this year, no summer wine cellar is complete without a few bottles of quality rosé. Possibly the most famous rosé wine in the world, our first offering is Whispering Angel – a global best seller thanks to its dry, crisp flavour profile full of summer fruits and acidic citrus with a lingering creamy finish.
Our second blush option is Minuty, a pale-as-you-like wine hailing from the South of France. Its delightful strawberry aroma is matched only by its crisp, dry palate with overtones of candied peach and orange. Last but certainly not least is Aix. This salmon-hued bottling comes from France’s most prestigious rosé region – Provence – and opens with a fresh, fruity aroma that screams summer. In the mouth it offers lively red fruit and citrus flavours with just a touch of spice.
The Sparkling Wines
Okay, so weddings, birthdays and special occasions of all kinds may not be taking place in their usual form right now – but that doesn’t mean we should give up celebrating all together. A great bottle of sparkling wine will make even the most dreary of lockdown days feel a little more special – and we’ve got some fantastic options. Taking our cues from the great Sir Winston Churchill, we’ve selected Pol Roger Brut Réserve as our first champagne. The perfect introduction to Churchill’s favourite champagne house, it boasts a straw yellow hue, fine bubbles and a nose of white flowers, green apple and brioche with just a touch of minerality. The palate, meanwhile, is a mouth-watering mix of stone fruits, honey, nuts and alluring acidity.
If you’ve yet to discover the delights of crémant then allow us to introduce you to Langlois-Chateau Crémant. Similar in profile to traditional champagne – but created using Loire grapes – it is full of character with a complex bouquet of white flowers, peach and grapefruit and a delicately tart flavour profile that means you won’t stop at one glass. Finally, a true classic: Bollinger Cuvée Brut. Dry with a toasty full-bodied flavour, it is a unique blend of pinot noir grapes mixed with aged house wines to create that distinctive Bollinger taste.
