London plays host to several world-renowned edifices. But although it’s often Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the like that draw the plaudits, the capital still houses some of the best-designed abodes in Europe. Our favourite property that we’ve stumbled across in recent weeks? This four-storey Edwardian house in Chiswick that’s been revamped by Riba Award-winning design and architecture firm, Found Associates.
As part of the renovation, “unsympathetic additions” located at the side and rear of the house were stripped away and then replaced with a single-storey pavilion that has since been connected to the original building via a continuous glazed roof light.
The pavilion also opens out to an adjoining terrace and garden via a retractable wall of glass – a feature that exposes the living and dining space to the location’s greensward and thus creates a sense of interplay between home and nature. This bright and open setting not only provides a great contrast to the formality of the original house’s Edwardian layout, but it’s also the ideal place for a gent to host lavish dinners or opulent cocktail parties.
Finally, the original rooms of the house have been given a contemporary update with wooden accents and minimal furnishings, all of which allow the homeowners to watch TV, write letters or sip on whiskey sours in the most stylish surroundings in the capital. The attic has also been converted into a bedroom in order to accommodate any last-minute guests.
