For his debut solo show, photographer James D. Kelly, known for his social-documentary captures and striking portraits, will focus on the topic of hedonism, illustrating a decade’s-worth of parties that he’s covered within London. Taking place between 15–19 May, at Somerset House, for Photo London, his ‘Night Light’ series will feature previously unseen images – there’s a birthday cake smashed on top of a head; dance-like-no-one’s-watching moments; a stolen kiss; and the inevitable passing out on the sofa – that showcase, and are a paean to, the vibrancy, unfiltered joy and euphoria that come with the capital’s legendary nightlife. ‘The images are portrayals of candid moments of elation which have organically drawn James in,’ so says the exhibition description.
Curating the show is Marie-Claudine Llamas, from Guerin Projects, who credits Kelly for the honesty of his work and the way in which it evokes the feel-good, blurry memories of one’s youth. “Their vivacity and joy are extremely uplifting, which is crucial in the time in which we live now,” Llamas says.
Speaking about his exhibition debut, Kelly says, “It’s been a great pleasure to look back on these special moments, and to reminisce on all of the good times. I’ve always been drawn to the hedonism and spontaneity of London nightlife – I never knew what unexpected moment I’d stumble upon.”
