This week, Maddox Gallery Mayfair revealed their latest exhibition. Titled ‘Between the Lines’, the show launched on Wednesday night and showcases a collection of text-based works by the likes of Tracey Emin, Christopher Wool, Ed Ruscha, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Harland Miller, The Connor Brothers and Richard Prince.
The show explores the symbiotic relationship between the written word and visual world, with over 40 evocative works highlighting the interplay between language and the power of words in modern society.
Harking back to the poetic cut-ups technique that was integral to William Burroughs’ practice in the 1960s, artists such as Harland Miller, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Ed Ruscha have long incorporated and recontextualised phrases, advertising slogans, billboards and book titles into their works — and the best can be found here.
Among the notable works, ‘I Want To Be Inside EU‘ by The Connor Brothers and ‘Everybody Is Full Of Shit’ by Mel Bochne are perhaps the most striking. The show will run until 26 June.
