You’d have thought that when an actor with as much recognition as Meryl Streep takes to the stage to accept a lifetime achievement award at a ceremony with as much stature as the Golden Globes, she might take the time to talk about her life on-screen. Last night, when accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement, Streep spoke out. Like many of her colleagues on the night, Streep used her allotted minutes to talk about the political situation in America. Instead of poking fun at the situation, as many others did, Streep took the chance to shut down Trump (although she never actually mentioned the President-elect by name). She likened the election and Trump’s win to a bad movie with a bad ending, spoke about positions of political power and bullying, intimidation and humiliation. Trump, naturally, stated to the New York Times that he hadn’t seen the speech but dismissed Streep as “a Hillary lover” and said that he was “not surprised” to be attacked by “liberal movie people.” He also responded by branding Streep as “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood”.
Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose
And now, George Clooney has swooped in to fight Streep’s corner, as reporter by The Guardian: “Aren’t you supposed to be running the country? I didn’t vote for him, I don’t support him, I don’t think he’s the right choice. At this moment in our lives we have to hope that he doesn’t destroy everything. The reality is you have to hope he will do a decent job because if the United States fails, really terrible things happen, so you have to hope that he can.”
