Penfolds and streetwear legend NIGO collaborate on a new limited-edition gifting collection
Penfolds’ latest collaboration with Japanese designer NIGO serves as a unique gifting option this festive season
With its near-two-century history and storied legacy, Penfolds has earned a reputation as a stalwart of fine wine’s stately old guard. But dismiss any notions of fustiness or conventionality. At the heart of the famed global winemaker’s philosophy is a commitment to creativity and experimentation. Since its inception in 1844, the success of Penfolds has been driven by generations of visionaries and the merging of science and art.
It is in this spirit of innovation that Penfolds unveils its latest gifting range for the 2024 festive season, in collaboration with one of the greatest visionaries of the fashion world today, Japanese designer NIGO.
NIGO’s creativity knows no bounds: as well as fashion design, he dabbles in music, photography and traditional Japanese ceramic art. It’s this refusal to be pigeonholed that makes him the ultimate creative partner for Penfolds. This new collection – Holiday by NIGO – marks the third collaboration between winemaker and designer. Available now for a limited time only in select retailers such as Harrods, Waitrose and Harvey Nichols, the Holiday by NIGO range comprises collectable festive gift boxes for some of Penfolds’ most coveted wines, each designed by NIGO, making them an ideal gift for wine lovers and fashionistas alike this festive season.
Highlights of the Holiday by NIGO collection include Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2022 and the Penfolds Max’s range, but the hero of the collection is undoubtedly Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, a wine that has developed a loyal following among collectors in recent years, both in Europe and around the world, thanks to its multi-decade ageing potential and strong association with Penfolds’ flagship wine, the iconic Grange.
In his approach to designing the collection, NIGO sought inspiration from the chequered pattern found in traditional Asian textiles – known as furoshiki. A key textile in ancient Japanese culture, furoshiki was traditionally used to wrap and transport goods. Today, it serves as a sustainable and long-lasting gift-wrapping option that adds a unique touch to the gift of Penfolds. “It was very important to me to incorporate my culture into this holiday collection,” NIGO says. “Integrating the chequered design and furoshiki was a clear way for me to honour that. With this furoshiki, I hope collectors can wrap, gift, and share their Penfolds wines this holiday season.”
