Frieze feels like a distant memory. But our friends over at London's Maddox Gallery continue to share brilliant British art all year-around, and this month sees Storytelling, an exhibition with the masterful Scottish photographer David Yarrow, come to London until the 26th of November.
Three floors of space at Maddox's new Mayfair gallery on 12 Berkeley Street will be committed to the exhibition, and a number of Yarrow's images take inspiration from Oliver Twist and Peaky Blinders—offering a love letter to the Britain and London of the past, of the Roaring Twenties, where "grit and glamour forged an unlikely alchemy," says the artist. Cara Delevigne and David Gandy star in unmissable, meticulously composed portraits that are clearly lifted from Peaky Blinders in David's own style.
There's also a chance to set your eyes on his famous photograph of footballer Erling Haaland, who is depicted by David as a striking Viking warrior, and magnificent examples of his work in South Africa, at the Dinokeng Game Reserve.
Accompanied by Kevin Richardson, The Lion Whisperer, Yarrow came face-to-face with the region's most notorious residents. You can expect more from David's experiences photographing landscapes of animals in the wild during the exhibition.
But as an all-encompassing expression of his body-of-work, there's no excuse not to visit the Maddox Gallery and peruse the brilliance, and versatility, of David Yarrow—all of his different interests and passions gathered together in one place.
If you can't make it however, and you happen to be flying out to exotic climes from Farnborough airport, it won't be your last chance to see Yarrow's work. Maddox have taken over the main passenger lounge with a small pop-up of his photography, including a piece titled Marshlands, an portrait of a lion that captures the raw, untamed beauty of the natural world, displayed, of all places, on a radar tower. It's a part of their ongoing partnership with Edmiston and the airport.
