When travelling, what do you always pack?, I travel a lot for both work and pleasure, but I always try to pack light and only take things I know I’m going to use. My travel cases of choice are from Globe-Trotter. They are handmade in the UK with natural leather and develop a beautiful patina with time.
I always bring a minimum of two suits in harmonious colours that I can mix-and-match. I then use shirts and accessories, such as ties and neckerchiefs, to dress the outfit up or down. In this way I always have at least five looks ready and will be prepared for almost any occasion.
My grooming essentials currently include Truefitt & Hill’s Clay and Paste for my hair, Frederic Malle’s Vetiver Extraordinaire scent and for moisturising I use natural 100% coconut oil. Finally, I never travel without my camera. I love being able to perpetuate a particular mood or moment when on the road.
Two- or three-piece?, A three-piece. I have always been fascinated by the style of the 1920s. The three-piece suit became prevalent in this era when it was reserved for very formal occasions. I have always favoured it over a two-piece – it’s a little more sophisticated when trying to achieve a classic, polished look.
Double or single-breasted?, There is something special about a double-breasted suit. It is an elegant and charismatic alternative to the single-breasted suit and a style that no gentleman should fear.
Oxfords or monkstraps?, My choice has always been an Oxford shoe. It’s a simple yet classic shoe that you can never go wrong with. I feel slightly awkward in monkstraps and the ones I have owned so far tend to be slightly too narrow for my foot. Perhaps I’ve just not found the right pair yet.
Best car you’ve ever driven?, The Rolls Royce Wraith. A powerful beast with the comfort and class of a limousine.
What would you call your yacht?, The Great Balthazar after my girlfriend, Ciinderella Balthazar. Because let’s face it… she is the boss.
What inspires you?, My passions are style and photography, so I get most of my inspiration through visuals. I love browsing old menswear magazines, books and illustrations from the 19th century.
I’m also inspired by movies. I go to the cinema at least twice a month and watch all kinds of genres. I enjoy soaking in the ambiance of beautifully set scenes and observing the different filming techniques. My weakness is tailoring, so I sometimes find myself walking out of a screening having missed the whole plot because I got carried away by great styling. My favourite movies include The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Great Gatsby (the 1974 versiob) and Drive.
Last track you played?, I Won’t Complain by Benjamin Clementine. I discovered Benjamin’s music last year when he played during a gala dinner at Abbey Road Studios. His strong lyrics are full of soul and he seems to not just play songs, but come to life through them. He is definitely one of the greatest live performers I have seen so far.
The last book you read?, I am currently reading Awareness: The Key to Living in Balance by Osho. The book is written like a bible with real life stories and metaphors. Its main point of discussion is the quality of being awake and present to the moment, a quality that Osho calls awareness. His theory is that once we can identify and understand what this quality of awareness is, we have the key to self-mastery in virtually every area of our lives.
Surfing or skiing?, Without a doubt skiing. There is nothing more therapeutic than putting the first tracks in the while the sun rises.
Favourite city?, London has and will always have my heart. I am captivated by the city’s vibrant energy and culture of positive, motivated individuals who are not afraid to dream and think big. Having moved here from a small town where people were stuck and lived by convenience, London is the contrary. With rents being as high as the skyscrapers, most of the population live here because they have the ambition of achieving something great. It’s a city I’m sure will be my home for the next 10 years or more.
What do you order at a bar?, A great Negroni is my drink of choice. If not, straight whisky.
Favourite food?, I’ve eaten a lot of extraordinary food but I could not give up my morning porridge. I cook my oats with almond milk, a whole banana and top it with blueberries.
Where would you retire?, One day, when I get enough of the Big Smoke, I will buy myself a house on a hill in Tuscany. Cook amazing food, spend time with my loved ones and enjoy the simple life. One day…
What quote do you live by?, “The most precious recourse we have is time.”
What does true style mean to you?, I see style as one of the main ways I express myself. I mostly wear tailoring, however, I love experimenting and do appreciate all different types of fashion, when done right. In my opinion the way to ‘good’ style is being yourself. Make an effort, wear clothes that make you feel comfortable, find the right fit and wear colours that compliment each other.
