We’d all like an invite to the Golden Globes. The only major Hollywood awards ceremony where you can pop open a bottle or two of champagne, it’s the first — and best — party of the year. We’d even risk being roasted by Ricky Gervais if we were offered a front row seat…
But it’s not just the company and bubbly that intrigues and attracts us — it’s the red carpet style. Every year, celebrities kick off their A-list awards season wardrobes with some strong looks, and 2020 was no different. So, from Nick Jonas and his bolo tie to Elton John’s specs, take a look at the best style hits from the night — and how to achieve them yourself…
Antonio Banderas and Andrew Scott were white knights
Who says black tie has to be black? Some of the best tuxedos of the night were white — as evidenced here by Andrew Scott and Antonio Banderas. Both attendees kept their trousers dark, their shoes patent and their shirts white — but Scott edges in front for us with that ivory-coloured bow tie.
So start off with some reliable British shoes, from Crockett & Jones, with lightweight leather soles and welts to ensure you bounce down the red carpet. Then follow Andrew Scott’s example and shrug on a Paul Smith tuxedo jacket, before jumping aboard the off-white bandwagon with this silk Gucci bow tie.
Daniel Craig and Nick Jonas doubled up
You’d think Daniel Craig would have played all his suiting cards by now — the man’s been tailored to the nines as 007 for almost a decade and a half, after all. But no, with a simple style tweak, Craig came out onto the red carpet dressed to kill in a look rarely seen on the actor: double-breasted. Nick Jonas took a similar approach, zhuzzing things up even further with a bolo tie.
If you’re looking to add a touch of superspy to your eveningwear, why not follow Craig to Anderson and Sheppard, where his singular double-breasted tuxedo was tailored. Don’t forget a crisp pocket square to keep those chiselled angles sharp, such as this contrast-tipped Emma Willis number. Or, if you’re looking to take the Jonas route, step up your neckwear game with a bow-beating bolo tie from Ralph Lauren.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt kept things reliably classic
The old ways are the best, or so they say. And, while the old days of these two stalwart actors getting overlooked during awards season seem to happily be over, the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood stars are still keeping tradition alive with their wardrobes. Pitt has paired his peaked lapels with a waistcoat — really throwing back his dinner jacket styling, while DiCaprio has opted for a softer shawl lapel.
We love both looks. So, if you’re after Leo’s style, look no further than Richard James’ beautifully tailored tux — woven from a weighty wool and mohair-blend thick enough to tackle the frostiest January red carpet. For Brad’s look, this Hugo Boss in 120s virgin wool has sharp, stylish peaked lapels. But, whatever dinner jacket style you opt for, keep the classic look going by backing it all up with a reliable, traditional Turnbull & Asser shirt.
Elton John and Tom Hanks didn’t follow the rules
Ah, Elton. Never one to follow the rules, Britain’s boldest hitmaker has always known how to reach the top — and he scooped up the gong for Best Original Song last night. His tuxedo came embroidered with a decorative flower and his initials, and was paired with a Roger Moore-era Bond-style ruffled shirt. Tom Hanks, another elder statesman of entertainment, went similarly flashy, and picked up his Lifetime Achievement Award in clear-framed glasses and a velvet tuxedo jacket with turned back cuffs.
Out of the two, the latter look is the style we’d plump for. And Richard James, once more, has delivered on the tailoring front. The cutter’s plush ‘Hyde’ jacket is the ideal garment with which to ape Hanks — complete with contrasting faille shawl lapels and covered buttons. Favourbrook do an excellent ruffled-front shirt if you’re after Elton’s look — and no-one makes a spectacular specs statement like Cubitts.
