The essential guide to holiday packing
Whatever size your suitcase, be prepared for every holiday scenario with expert packing tips from Clements and Church…
Summer is here and, with the British weather failing spectacularly to impress, that holiday on the horizon has never looked more enticing. Of course, before you jet off to your chic villa in the Med or private island in the Bahamas, there’s one final hurdle to cross: packing.
It’s tricky enough planning for a long weekend in the country (two pairs of chinos or three? Trainers or loafers?) but, when two long weeks in an undiscovered destination stretch out before you, who knows what situations may arise. Some items – swim shorts, sunglasses, a range of T-shirts – are a given. Smart destinations, however, often mean strict restaurant dress codes and impromptu gatherings with well-heeled neighbours. It pays to be prepared but does this really mean you need a different shirt and jacket for every evening and how on earth will you fit four pairs of brogues in a cabin-size bag?
According to the experts at Clements and Church, the secret is to plan ahead and pack smart, creating a holiday capsule wardrobe that offers something for every eventuality. Here are their top tips…
Build your wardrobe around one key piece
It can be tempting to leave your blazers behind if you’re off to warmer climes but, from the French Riviera to Fiji, a tailored jacket is a must if you’re heading out to restaurants and bars. However, as this is one of the bulkiest items in your case it’s imperative you choose wisely. Opt for a lightweight fabric in an eye-catching but versatile fabric that you can build the rest of your wardrobe around. This blue and white check number from Clements & Church can be dressed down with a T-shirt for day or paired with a classic white shirt for evening. Tie optional – you are on holiday after all.
Choose separates in complementary colours
If you’ve chosen to take a blue and white jacket don’t start packing green trousers and lavender shirts. They won’t go and you won’t wear them. Instead think about your holiday wardrobe in terms of outfits – if there aren’t at least two other pieces in your case you can wear an item with then it stays behind. Choose plain colours – beige chinos, navy shorts, white T-shirts – and avoid overly printed items to give yourself as many outfit options as possible.
Smart trainers are your friend
Once you’ve packed a pair of loafers, sneakers and deck shoes you may find there’s little room for anything else. Maximise the usefulness of your shoes by opting for a pair of smart trainers that work with denim, trousers and tailored shorts. Clements and Church offer a range of lace-up and monk strap styles in sophisticated neutral shades that are chic enough to get past even the most robust ‘no trainer’ door policy.
