These are the best-dressed men from the 2019 Oscars
Here, we break down the styles and trends seen at last night’s Academy Awards, and show you how to steal the looks for yourself…
It seems that, every year, the star-studded style statements of the Academy Awards make more headlines than the winners themselves. But, this year — around a ceremony that saw Green Book triumph in a shock Best Picture win, and Olivia Colman scoop up a gong on her first nomination — fashion took a back seat.
But still, among the A-list guests, there were certain outfits that caught our eye. However, rather than standing out for being loud or ostentatious, they were winners in our eyes for showcasing subtle twists on classic looks. So, from shifting your colour scheme to trying out new textures, these are the best-dressed men of the Oscars, and how to steal their looks…
Dial down the colour of your tux
The classic dinner jacket is iconic for a reason. But, in a year where ‘subtlety’ seems to have been the watchword, it’s no surprise that many stars decided to pare things back at last night’s Academy Awards — instead deciding to dial down the colour range of their tuxes and keep things monochrome.
Just take Christian Bale — up for the Best Actor award, the Briton cut his swathe under the radar by pairing a black suit with black shirt, tie and shoes. Similarly, Gentleman’s Journal cover star Samuel L Jackson added no colour to his outfit, opting for a grey tuxedo and black bow tie.

Add some texture with a velvet jacket
This is as exciting as the mainstream trends got this year, with actors including Marvel’s Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan buttoning up velvet jackets. It’s a look that adds a little texture to your ensemble, allows you to quietly experiment with colours, and puts your own singular twist on the classic awards season look.
And you need look no further than Richard E Grant to see how it’s done. The 61-year-old may have missed out on the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, but he won the red carpet in this similarly-coloured Brunello Cucinelli tuxedo. As did David Oyelowo, another Briton with a flair for fashion, seen here in a custom-made dark green ETRO number.

Go for the classic dinner jacket
Of course, the safest option is often the best. And, as we mentioned above, the classic dinner jacket has become an icon for a reason. Clean lines, solid colours and cuts so tailored they’d flatter any figure, we saw a resurgence in popularity for this traditional style this year.
From Bradley Cooper, who stole the show with his performance of A Star Is Born’s ‘Shallow’ alongside Lady Gaga, to the main man of the evening — Rami Malek, who carried home the statuette for his starring turn in Bohemian Rhapsody, it’s clear that the black-and-white style will remain the gold standard of occasion wear for years to come.
