These were the best dressed men at the 2020 BAFTAs
From Taron Egerton’s aubergine velvet Giorgio Armani tuxedo to John Boyega’s bright red jacquard dinner jacket, these were the best looks on the red carpet
The BAFTAs didn’t bring many surprises. Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger took home the top two acting gongs, 1917 scooped best film and there were tens of politically-charged speeches. Instead, the real surprises came sashaying down the red carpet — pops of colour, new textures and some of the shiniest shoes seen this side of Christmas party season. Take a look at the best below…
Michael Ward
Picking up the coveted BAFTA Rising Star Award, Top Boy and Blue Story star Michael Ward wore a classic, velvet-lapelled, tailored tuxedo from Gucci with patent shoes. He also strapped on a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Large Duoface Small Seconds.
Taron Egerton
The Kingsman star was nominated for his work in Rocketman. Sadly, the Welshman didn’t win, but his Giorgio Armani made-to-measure ensemble — an aubergine velvet peak lapel evening jacket, classic black trousers and satin bow tie — ensured a star turn.
Jack Lowden
Another Giorgio Armani get-up, friend of Gentleman’s Journal Jack Lowden wore a midnight blue tuxedo in cashmere and silk with oversized silk peak lapels, heavy pleat-front evening shirt and navy tie. Lowden was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award.
Prince William

Before he criticised the lack of diversity within the nominees, BAFTA chairman Prince William cut a dashing figure on the red carpet in a classic peak-lapelled black dinner jacket and slightly-oversized black bow tie. Both he and the Duchess of Cambridge wore outfits they have worn before in the name of sustainability.
Al Pacino

Nominated for his supporting role in The Irishman, Pacino may have taken a tumble on the red carpet, but the acting legend soon brushed it off. In his dark New Balance trainers and Armani navy overcoat, the 79-year-old scooped up the award for coolest look; thanks in part to his evening sunglasses and sparkly black scarf.

Simplicity was key for the 1917 star. Mackay buttoned up a chic Celine dinner jacket, with black patent shoes, messy hairstyle and perfectly-proportioned bow-tie.

Lean, mean and green, Andrew Scott continues his effortless breeze around awards season. This time, he slipped on a Paul Smith evergreen velvet tuxedo, a black studded dress shirt and bow tie with *just* the right amount of flop.

What can we say about John Boyega’s outrageously bold, outrageously good, outrageously outrageous outfit? In red jacquard, this is the ideal winter warmer for a cold evening — and even gave the red carpet a run for its money. Our favourite touch? The matching red ring.

Peak-lapelled and with contrasting colours around the neckline, Joe Alwyn’s subtly blue outfit may have been our get-up of the night. Black shoes, trousers, shirt and bow tie blend into the background, and allow that quiet statement of a jacket room to impress.

Before he scooped up the Best Adapted Screenplay gong for anti-hate Nazi comedy Jojo Rabbit, Taika Waititi strolled nonchalantly up the red carpet in his Brunello Cucinelli tuxedo. Suavely shawl-lapelled, we’re particularly impressed by that slick quarter-inch of pocket square.
Kelvin Harrison Jr

With a huge bow tie and even bigger lapels, Kelvin Harrison Jr kept things effectively monochrome with his red carpet Gucci get-up. The rising star posed with Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson in front of the cameras.

The Sex Education star kept things buttoned up in a six (count them) button double-breasted jacket, with matching waistcoat hiding underneath. Great floppy bow tie. Better pocket square. Even better patent shoes. A winning ensemble.
