Well didn’t awards season just leave the best until last? Not only did Bong Joon Ho’s magnificent Parasite become the first foreign-language film to win the Best Picture accolade, but the red carpet was also teeming with looks to remember.
The Irishman’s costume designer Sandy Powell sported a suit covered in A-list signatures, Sir Elton John wore mis-matching trainers and a bright purple dinner jacket and filmmaker Charles Weingarten even brought his dog along. Below are some of the best looks from the night…
Robert De Niro and Al Pacino
They weren’t going to disappoint, were they? De Niro and Pacino, the elder statesmen of mob movies, kept things classic. De Niro suited up in monochrome and Pacino wore some suede slippers along with a subtle jacquard black jacket.
Brad Pitt, Renee Zellweger, Joaquin Phoenix
Another iconic team, three of the top winners of the night also wore traditional black tie, with Joaquin Phoenix still slipping into the Stella McCartney tux he’s been wearing all season. We’re particularly taken by Brad Pitt’s choice; a Brioni velvet shawl-necked dinner jacket.
Leonardo DiCaprio
Pitt’s co-star, and nominee in the Best Actor category, needs no introduction. Emanating Golden Age style, the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood star strolled the carpet in a peaked-lapel tuxedo, conservatively sized bow tie and his usual A-list, slicked-back haircut.
Rami Malek and Mahershala Ali
Here’s the duo we never knew we needed: last year’s Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor returning to the red carpet. In head-to-toe black, both stars wore tuxedos — with Malek opting for a double-breasted offering from Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello. Ali, in Ermenegildo Zegna XXX, added a splash of colour with a green gemstone.
Timothée Chalamet
The sartorial gift that keeps on giving, Timothée Chalamet wore a navy zip-up tracksuit by Prada over a white polo neck for the Oscars. Dressing down, however, it was not. That brooch you see? It’s white gold, ruby, diamond and platinum — and Cartier.
John Cho
A terracotta tuxedo? Why has no-one done this before? John Cho’s current horror flick, The Grudge, may be the furthest thing from Oscar bait, but his sense of style still has our hairs standing on end. The slight asymmetry is what makes this outfit, as well as the all-black bow tie and shirt combo.
George Mackay and Dean-Charles Chapman
The men of the moment may have not seen 1917 scoop up as many awards as it did at the BAFTAs, but George Mackay and Dean-Charles Chapman sure looked the part. Mackay, in Dunhill, also got the asymmetrical note, while Chapman’s red carnation is his own nod to DiCaprio’s old-school glamour.
Tom Hanks
He may not have won for his wonderful turn in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, but Tom Hanks will always be a treasure of the red carpet. The actor seems to have been favouring velvet of late — and we can’t think of anything softer or more stylish for the icon to wear on the red carpet.
