Based on the series of Stephen King novels, the ‘western science fiction horror’ hits cinemas later this year
When Stephen King’s celebrated Dark Tower series was first earmarked for the cinematic treatment, many said it couldn’t be done. Sprawling, genre-spanning and mind-boggling, it looked like a thankless task. But, over the last year or so, news has trickled out that there will be both films and television series in the DT expanded universe.
And, today, we have our first glimpse of the first epic in the shape of a trailer. Take a look below.
This first story will borrow and steal from several volumes of the celebrated story, with Idris Elba taking the role of Roland Deschain, a gunslinger – with enviable moves – who is tasked with taking on Matthew McConaughey’s ‘Man in Black’, an ageless trickster.
After an 11-year old boy falls into another dimension, Elba’s character takes him under his gun-toting wing as they travel to the titular Dark Tower, where they will complete a quest that will save all existence from extinction. No pressure then.
Many fans of the book series are likely on tenterhooks to see their beloved stories translate to the silver screen. But we’re most looking forward to the first time pairing of Elba and McConaughey – two of the most talented actors of their generation clashing on screen in a tale that looks set to shake up summer cinema.
